Etymology

The word joins τηλε- (far, distant) with the stem of ὀπτικός (relating to sight), plus the adjectival suffix -ικός. It was coined in the twentieth century alongside τηλεόραση, the Greek word for television, to describe anything connected to that medium. The pattern mirrors how English built television from Greek tele- and Latin visio.
