Etymology
Οπτικός comes from ancient Greek ὀπτικός, an adjective built on the verbal root ὀπ-, meaning to see. That root also gave the noun ὄψις, meaning sight or appearance. The word entered scientific Latin and then English as optic and optical, which is why the two languages still track each other closely in this domain.
