Etymology
Αρκούδα descends from ancient Greek ἄρκτος (arktos), the standard classical word for bear. In Byzantine Greek a variant form ἄρκος combined with the suffix -ούδα, originally a diminutive or affectionate ending, to give ἀρκούδα. This new form gradually replaced the older ἄρκτος in everyday speech, though ἄρκτος survives in learned compounds like αρκτικός (arctic).
