Etymology

Κουμπί descends from the Byzantine Greek κομβίον, a diminutive of the ancient noun κόμβος, meaning knot. Early fasteners were small knotted loops of cord, so the word for a little knot shifted to mean the fastener itself. Over time κομβίον wore down to the modern form κουμπί.
