Etymology

The word comes from ancient Greek περιπέτεια, a noun built on the verb περιπίπτω, "to fall around, to fall in with, to encounter." Aristotle used it in the Poetics for the sudden reversal of fortune in a tragedy's plot, and English later borrowed it whole as the literary term "peripeteia." In everyday Modern Greek the sense broadened from a plot twist to any adventure or unexpected ordeal.
