Word family
Etymology
Αποτυχία is the noun form of the verb αποτυγχάνω, built from the prefix από- (away, off, a reversal of the base sense) and the verb τυγχάνω (to hit the mark, to obtain, to happen upon), plus the abstract-noun suffix -ία. So the word literally frames failure as a missed shot rather than a bad outcome in itself. The root of τυγχάνω is not securely traced to a Proto-Indo-European form; some scholars treat it as possibly Pre-Greek, so no PIE root is given here.
