Etymology
Πιάτο entered Greek from Venetian piato (standard Italian piatto), meaning a flat dish. That Italian word goes back to Vulgar Latin plattus, flat, which itself was borrowed from the Greek adjective πλατύς, broad or flat. So the word made a round trip: Greek gave the root meaning to Latin, Italian shaped it into a noun for tableware, and Greek borrowed it back in that new form during the long period of Venetian trade and rule in Greek lands.
