Etymology

The verb combines the prefix κατά, meaning down, with βαίνω, an ancient verb meaning to step or go. Βαίνω goes back to a Proto-Indo-European root for motion, and it survives in Modern Greek mostly in compounds like this one. The plain form βαίνω is rare on its own today, but prefixed forms such as κατεβαίνω and ανεβαίνω are everyday vocabulary.
