Etymology

Ανεβαίνω descends from Ancient Greek ἀναβαίνω, a compound of the prefix ἀνά (up, upward) and the verb βαίνω (to step, to walk, to go). Βαίνω itself goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root *gʷem- (to go, to come), which also underlies Latin venire and English come. Modern Greek kept the compound but reshaped its irregular ancient aorist into the simpler ανέβηκα/ανέβω pattern used today.
