Etymology

Κεφάλαιο comes from the ancient Greek κεφάλαιον, the neuter form of the adjective κεφάλαιος, meaning 'of the head' or 'chief'. That adjective derives from κεφαλή, 'head'. In ancient usage κεφάλαιον already meant 'main point' or 'sum total', and both the modern senses, 'chapter' (the head or heading of a section of text) and 'capital' (the principal sum of money), grew out of that core idea of a main or leading part.
