Etymology
Έρωτας descends from Ancient Greek ἔρως (érōs), the word for passionate love and also the name of the god of love. The modern form adds the common masculine noun ending -ας to the ancient stem ερωτ- (seen in the ancient genitive ἔρωτος). The word passed into English through borrowings such as 'erotic' and 'eros'.
