Etymology

Νοιάζομαι comes from the Modern Greek noun νοιά, meaning care or worry. Νοιά developed from the older word ἔννοια (concern, notion), through loss of the initial vowel and simplification of the consonant cluster. Ἔννοια itself goes back to νοῦς or νόος, mind, but the deeper origin of that word is disputed among etymologists, and some argue it comes from a Pre-Greek substrate rather than inherited Indo-European. The verb is built by attaching the deponent suffix -ζομαι to the noun stem, a common way Greek forms verbs describing an inner state.
