Word family
Etymology
Πρόκληση descends from ancient Greek πρόκλησις, formed from the prefix προ- (forth, before) and the verb καλέω (to call), plus the action-noun suffix -σις, now -ση. It originally meant a formal calling-out, such as summoning someone to a contest or issuing a legal challenge. That old sense of a public call to contest lives on in the word's two modern meanings: a difficult task worth facing, and a provocative act.
