Etymology
The word comes from Ancient Greek Ὠκεανός (Ōkeanós), the name of the Titan who personified the great river believed to encircle the flat earth. Its origin is uncertain and it may not be Indo-European at all, possibly borrowed from a pre-Greek Aegean language. The English word 'ocean' descends directly from this Greek term through Latin Oceanus. Modern Greek kept the word largely unchanged in form and meaning.
