Etymology
The word comes from Ancient Greek Ἀκαδήμεια, the name of an olive grove outside Athens where Plato taught his students. The grove was named after a local hero called Akademos. Latin borrowed the word as Academia, and from there it spread into most European languages, including back into modern Greek in its current form.
