Etymology
Παθαίνω comes from the same stem as ancient Greek πάσχω (paskhō), 'to suffer, to experience.' That verb's aorist stem παθ- (as in ἔπαθον, 'I suffered') also produced the noun πάθος, 'suffering' or 'experience.' Modern Greek built παθαίνω by attaching the common verb-forming suffix -αίνω to this old stem. Through πάθος, English later borrowed words like pathos and sympathy that trace back to the same root.
