Etymology
Πάθος is an Ancient Greek noun built on the root of the verb πάσχω, meaning to suffer or to undergo something. It originally denoted whatever happens to a person or what they experience, whether painful or emotional. Over time the sense narrowed toward the intense feeling itself, both suffering and, later, ardent passion. The same root gives Greek πένθος, grief or mourning, formed with a different vowel grade.
