Etymology

The word comes from the present participle of the verb παρεμπίπτω, a compound of παρά (beside, alongside), εν- (in, shortened to εμ- before π), and πίπτω (to fall). Literally it means something like "falling in beside," that is, cropping up incidentally alongside the main matter. The adverb was built by adding -ως to the participial stem παρεμπιπτοντ-, the same pattern used in words like ενδεχομένως and προσφάτως. πίπτω itself traces back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning "to fly" or "to fall."
