Etymology

Συν comes from Ancient Greek σύν, a preposition meaning "with" or "together with", used with the dative case. Scholars trace it to a Proto-Indo-European form close to *ksun-, which also produced Sanskrit words for "together". In Modern Greek it survives mainly as the word for mathematical "plus" and as a formal way to say "in addition to", while its old prepositional force lingers in a few set phrases.
