Etymology

Βλέμμα comes from the verb βλέπω, meaning to see or look. Ancient Greek formed nouns of result with the suffix -μα, so βλέπω plus -μα yields a word for the thing produced by looking: a gaze or a glance. The consonant cluster πμ smooths to μμ, giving βλέμμα rather than βλέπμα. The deeper origin of βλέπω itself is disputed among linguists, so no secure Indo-European root is given here.
