Etymology

The word comes from Ancient Greek τραγῳδία, a compound of τράγος ("goat") and ᾠδή ("song"). Scholars still debate why a goat is involved: it may have been a prize in early singing contests, a sacrificial animal, or a reference to the goatskin costumes worn by early performers. Modern Greek kept the word largely unchanged, using it for both the dramatic genre and any disastrous event.
