Etymology
Τραγικός derives from τραγῳδία (tragoidia), the ancient Greek word for tragedy, itself traditionally linked to τράγος (goat) and ᾠδή (song). The compound likely referred to a goat-song, possibly tied to a prize goat or to satyr performers dressed in goatskins during early dramatic contests. The adjective τραγικός came to describe anything belonging to or characteristic of tragic drama, and by extension anything disastrous or sorrowful.
