Etymology
Καπνός goes back unchanged to Ancient Greek, where it already meant smoke. Its origin before that is not settled. Many linguists treat it as a word the Greeks borrowed from an earlier, non-Indo-European language spoken in the region before Greek arrived. Because of that, no secure Indo-European root or cognate set can be given for it.
