Συνεργός comes from συν- (together, with) plus ἔργον (work) plus the agent ending -ός, so it literally means one who works alongside another. In ancient and Koine Greek the word was neutral, even used by Paul in the New Testament for his fellow workers in the church. In Modern Greek the meaning narrowed to a legal sense: someone who helps commit a crime, an accomplice.
