Word family

κατοικώto inhabit, to live in
οίκοςhouse (formal register)Etymology
Συγκάτοικος joins the prefix συν- ('together, with'), which becomes συγ- before a following κ, to κάτοικος ('inhabitant, resident'). Κάτοικος itself comes from κατά ('down, thoroughly') attached to the verb οἰκέω ('to inhabit'), built on the noun οἶκος ('house'). The οἶκος root traces to a Proto-Indo-European word for a house or settlement, and the compound has denoted someone who shares a dwelling since ancient Greek. Modern Greek uses it as the everyday word for roommate.
