Etymology
γρήγορος comes from Ancient Greek γρήγορος, meaning "awake, watchful, vigilant." That word was built on the reduplicated perfect stem of the verb ἐγείρω, "to rouse, to awaken," which goes back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning "to wake." Over time in Byzantine and later Greek, the sense drifted from mental or physical alertness to actual speed, giving the modern meaning "fast, quick." The older sense of watchfulness survives in the related verb γρηγορώ, still used in formal and religious speech.
