Etymology

From Medieval/Late Greek δακτυλίδιον (daktylídion), a diminutive of Ancient Greek δακτύλιος (daktýlios, 'ring'), itself derived from δάκτυλος (dáktylos, 'finger'). Literally a 'little finger-thing', i.e. the small hoop worn on the finger. The everyday modern form δαχτυλίδι shows the regular shift of the cluster -κτ- toward -χτ- in spoken Greek.
