Etymology
From Ancient Greek κῆπος (kêpos) 'garden, orchard, plantation', with the Doric variant κᾶπος (kâpos). The Modern Greek word continues this form essentially unchanged in meaning. Its deeper origin is uncertain and may be Pre-Greek; a comparison with Germanic words for a measured plot of land has been proposed but remains debated.
