Etymology
Formed from the ancient adjective εὐγενής ('well-born, noble'), itself a compound of εὖ ('well, good') and the root γεν- ('birth, descent', from γίγνομαι 'to be born'), plus the productive adjectival suffix -ικός. The original sense 'of noble birth' shifted in meaning toward outward refinement, so that in Modern Greek ευγενικός denotes courteous, kind behavior rather than aristocratic lineage.
