παρόλο is a univerbation of the phrase παρ' όλο, literally 'despite all/the whole', from the preposition παρά ('beside, contrary to, despite') plus όλο, the neuter of όλος ('all, whole'). It is most often followed by που to form the concessive conjunction παρόλο που ('although'), or by a noun in the accusative (παρόλο τον...). The construction parallels English 'despite all (that)' giving rise to the concessive sense.
