Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek εὐγένεια, built from the adjective εὐγενής, meaning well-born. That adjective joins εὖ, meaning good or well, with γένος, meaning birth, stock, or kind. Originally the noun referred to noble birth or good breeding. Over centuries its sense shifted from birth status to the good manners such status was supposed to guarantee, and in modern Greek it now means plain politeness or kindness.
