Etymology

The verb comes from Ancient Greek ἀγνοέω, built from the negative prefix ἀ- (not) and the root γνο-, the same root found in γιγνώσκω, "to know." The root traces back to the Proto-Indo-European word for knowing. Greek kept the old contracted verb ending, so αγνοώ literally means "I do not know."
