Γαλοπούλα is a compound formed from γάλος, the Greek word for the male turkey, and the suffix -πούλα, drawn from πουλί, meaning bird. Γάλος itself is usually traced to the Italian gallo, cock, since early modern Italians called the newly imported American bird gallo d'India, Indian rooster. Greek then added a native bird-suffix to name the female, and the word later widened to cover the species as a whole.
