Etymology
Μαλακός is an old Greek adjective, already used by Homer to mean soft or gentle. It is built on the same root as the verb μαλάσσω, to soften or knead. Scholars are not certain the root goes back further into Proto-Indo-European, since some link it to a pre-Greek substrate word rather than a reconstructed root.
