Etymology

Έναρξη comes from the ancient Greek ἔναρξις, a noun built from the verb ἐνάρχομαι, meaning to make a beginning in something. That verb is itself a compound of ἐν- (in) and ἄρχομαι, the middle voice of ἄρχω, to begin or to be first. The root αρχ- carries both senses of starting and ruling, which is why it also underlies words like αρχή (beginning, authority) and αρχηγός (leader).
