Etymology
The verb combines the prefix προ- (before, forth) with κύπτω (to bend forward, to stoop). Together they originally suggested leaning or bending out toward something. Over time the sense shifted from a physical motion to an abstract one: a fact, problem, or conclusion 'leans out' into view, that is, it arises or emerges. The origin of κύπτω itself is not securely traced to an Indo-European root.
