Etymology

The word traces back to ancient Greek αδάμας (adamas), meaning unconquerable or the hardest metal, itself built from the negative prefix a- and the verb δαμάζω, to tame. Latin borrowed this as diamas, diamantem, and the term passed through Old French and Italian diamante before returning to Greek in its modern form διαμάντι. The initial alpha was lost along the way, and the δια- that replaced it is simply how the borrowed Latin/Italian form settled into Greek, not a new prefix with its own meaning.
