Etymology

Ανατριχιαστικός derives from the verb ανατριχιάζω, meaning to shudder or get goosebumps, built on the prefix ανά- (up) and the root of τρίχα (hair). The image is of hair standing up on the skin from fear or cold. The adjectival suffix -στικός turns the verb into a description of something that causes this reaction. The deeper origin of the hair-root itself is not firmly established in Greek etymology.
