Etymology

The word combines πυρ, the Greek word for fire, with a form of the verb σβήνω, to extinguish, plus the adjectival suffix -ικός, meaning pertaining to. Together the parts read roughly as fire-extinguishing. Πυρ goes back to a well-established Indo-European root for fire. The extinguishing part, σβήνω, has no secure Indo-European root and is generally traced to a pre-Greek substrate word instead.
