Μόνιμος comes from the verb μένω, meaning to remain or stay. The suffix -ιμος turns a verb root into an adjective describing a capacity or tendency, so μόνιμος literally means inclined to remain, hence permanent or stable. Ancient Greek dictionaries such as LSJ list μένω directly as its source. The same root, PIE *men- (to remain), also lies behind Latin manere, which gives English words like permanent, remain, and mansion.
