Etymology

Ουρλιάζω developed in medieval Greek from the ancient verb ωρύομαι, which meant to howl or roar and was used mainly for wolves and other animals. Sound changes in spoken Greek reshaped the old form into the modern one, and the meaning widened to cover human screaming as well as animal howling. The verb now takes the common Greek suffix -ιάζω, seen in many verbs describing sudden or intense actions.
