Ασφαλιστικός is built on the verb ασφαλίζω, meaning to insure or make secure. That verb comes from the adjective ασφαλής, safe or secure, formed from the negative prefix α- and the root of the verb σφάλλω, to trip, fail, or err. So something ασφαλές is literally 'not liable to fail.' The suffix -τικός turns the verb into an adjective describing what pertains to that action, giving 'relating to insuring or securing.'
