Ασφαλής is built from the negating prefix α- and a root tied to the verb σφάλλω, which means to trip up or to cause to fail. The two combine with the adjective-forming suffix -ής, giving a literal sense of not liable to stumble or fail. Over time this settled into the everyday meaning of safe or secure. The deeper origin of σφάλλω is disputed among linguists, some treat it as inherited, others as a Pre-Greek word, so no confirmed Proto-Indo-European root can be given.
