The word joins ασθενής, meaning sick or weak, with the combining form -φόρος, meaning carrying or bearing, from the verb φέρω, to carry. Ασθενής itself comes from the privative prefix α- plus σθένος, strength, so it literally means without strength. The whole compound thus means carrying the sick, and Greek speakers shortened the fuller phrase ασθενοφόρο αυτοκίνητο, ambulance vehicle, to the single neuter word used today.
