Etymology

Αποτελώ combines the prefix από- (from, out of) with τελώ, a verb meaning to complete or carry out, itself built on the noun τέλος (end, completion, purpose). The compound originally carried a sense of bringing something to full completion or producing it as an outcome. In Modern Greek this narrowed to the everyday meaning of forming or making up a whole, as parts constitute it.
