Etymology
Συγγενής comes from the prefix σύν, meaning together or with, joined to the root γεν-, the root of γένος (race, stock) and γίγνομαι (to be born). Together they mean born of the same stock, or related by birth. Ancient Greek used it as an adjective, but Greek speakers today use it mainly as a noun for a family member.
