Etymology
Καθηγήτρια is the feminine form of καθηγητής, built from the prefix κατά (thoroughly, down) and the verb ἡγέομαι (to lead, to guide). In ancient Greek the compound described someone who leads or guides others closely, and by the modern period it had narrowed to mean a secondary-school teacher or university professor. The feminine suffix -τρια marks the agent as female, matching the male form καθηγητής.
