Etymology

The word traces back to Ancient Greek τάλαντον, which meant a balance scale and, by extension, a unit of weight or a sum of money. Latin borrowed it as talentum, still meaning a sum of money. The sense shifted to 'natural gift' in medieval Europe, largely through the biblical Parable of the Talents, where a servant is entrusted with a sum of money to invest and grow. Modern Greek ταλέντο is a re-borrowing of this later, figurative sense, arriving through Italian and French rather than descending directly from the ancient word.
