Etymology

Σύμπαν comes from the ancient Greek adjective σύμπας, σύμπασα, σύμπαν, formed from σύν (together, with) and πᾶν, the neuter of πᾶς (all). The neuter form came to stand on its own as a noun meaning the whole of things, and later the universe. Modern Greek kept this noun for its main scientific and everyday word for the cosmos.
