Etymology
παγκόσμιος is a compound built from παν- ("all") and κόσμος ("world, order"), closed with the adjectival ending -ιος. The word literally means "pertaining to the whole world." κόσμος itself is old in Greek and its ultimate root is disputed among linguists, so no single Proto-Indo-European root can be given with confidence for the whole compound.
